‘For a solid, large dwelling, this house hovers on site. It’s a trick of the eye, created by pairing a recessive lower level that disappears with an upper level that is flooded with light and outstanding views.’
Barry Condon of Condon Scott Architects achieved this sleight of hand by making the ground floor, which is built on a slope, visually negative. By applying a dark stain on the cedar cladding to the lower level’s perimeter, it recedes, allowing the floor above centre stage.
