Far Horizon House

Wānaka, New Zealand

Renders by Condon Scott Architects

On a large, semi-rural site on the outskirts of Wānaka, within the private community of Far Horizon, this modern, high-end residence is designed as a series of integrated, lightly stepped forms, oriented towards Lake Wānaka.

Cantilevered planes are spanned by expansive floor-to-ceiling glazing, fully operable to create seamless flow between interior and exterior living. Consisting of a horizontal roof and floor plane, these extend beyond the boundaries of the walls to create sheltered outdoor spaces and deep eaves to protect the home-owners from the harsh Central Otago sunshine.

In response to the gently sloping site, the home is designed to step down over multiple levels, with the upper level consisting entirely of an expansive master suite. From the exterior, this master suite occupies the highest point of the building and its cantilevered form creates a sheltered entranceway to the front door.

Both inside and out, the material palette is dark, sleek and textural. The exterior cladding is a combination of Shou Sugi Ban (charred blackened timber) with board-marked concrete, while the interior features darkly stained oak veneer, black marble and polished concrete floors. As the architects, we were engaged for full interior design consultancy on this project.

The spacious garage has ample space for two vehicles, a large boat and recreational equipment for the home-owners to enjoy the range of lakeside activities on offer.
