Lake Hāwea Esplanade House

Lake Hāwea, New Zealand

Renders by Condon Scott Architects

In a stunning lakeside location, slightly elevated on a terrace above Lake Hāwea, this house is purposefully designed to encapsulate the surrounding natural landscapes.

The home is situated on a unique corner site along the small township’s arterial esplanade and a well-used accessway, which leads down to the waters edge. The design required thoughtful consideration to retain a sense of privacy from lake-goers and walkers utilising the popular tracks in front of the property. This was resolved by angling and recessing the western windows, creating angled fins that serve a dual purpose by hindering passerby’s line of sight into the home.

The interiors of the home are minimalist and contemporary with clean lines and solid forms, while the timber and concrete palette cohesively connects the exterior and interiors finishes. A sunken lounge allows uninterrupted, beautifully framed views, drawing the eye to the mountain ranges at the lake’s headwaters. A private pool is situated on the eastern side of the home, for the home-owners enjoyment on lazy summer days.
