Mt Iron Rise, Wānaka

Nestled on the north side of Mt Iron, this intergenerational holiday home is designed to embrace its extraordinary setting while responding sensitively to the challenges of the landscape. Sitting high above Wānaka  and surrounded by native kanuka forest, the site commands panoramic lake and mountain views.

The design takes cues from the simplicity and warmth of a modern crib, with robust materials chosen for both character and resilience. Fire risk, wind exposure and the shifting shade patterns of the hillside were critical considerations in shaping the form and layout. A combination of brick and dark steel clads the exterior, grounding the home in its rugged, exposed context, while the interior palette of plywood and timber brings a sense of natural warmth and comfort.

Condon Scott were engaged for full services — architecture, interior design, and construction observation. Upon completion, the home will serve generations of family, offering a place to gather, unwind and remain closely connected to the surrounding landscape.
