Pekepeke Cabin, Queenstown

Located near the access road to The Remarkables ski field, this compact Queenstown cabin forms the first stage of a wider architectural masterplan. Designed as a self-contained retreat, the project balances a modest footprint with a highly resolved architectural response to its alpine forest setting.

Set among established trees, the cabin is carefully positioned to minimise site impact while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. A raised timber walkway leads to the entrance, where a custom stained glass window introduces a warmth and personal touch. Inside, the interior design, also carried out by Condon Scott, is expressed through exposed structure, timber linings, and a simple, cohesive palette that reflects the tones and textures of the forest.

The selected exterior materials reinforce the cabin’s relationship to place. Charcoal-stained cedar cladding creates a dark, recessive form that allows the building to sit quietly within the trees. This approach ensures the architecture remains durable, low-maintenance, and appropriate for the Central Otago alpine environment.

Internally, the cabin is arranged as a single open volume with a mezzanine bedroom. Angled wall geometry expands the sense of space and directs views outward, while carefully positioned windows frame the forest and the Remarkables mountain range. The south-facing orientation provides soft, indirect natural light, supporting a consistent interior environment suited to rest, retreat, and creative use.

With attention given to exterior and interior material selection, spatial clarity and connection to place, the result is a contemporary cabin that integrates seamlessly with its Queenstown environment.
