Nestled in the steeply sloping landscape of Kelvin Heights, this Queenstown alpine retreat offers breathtaking views of Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountains. Designed for a European-based client, the brief called for a spacious home that could accommodate two generations, ensuring both comfort and privacy. The multi-terraced residence maximises the site’s steep terrain, allowing for an expansive floor plan across three distinct levels.

Sitting amongst rocky schist outcrops, the home is carefully integrated into its rugged surroundings, with the first floor serving as a private master retreat, while the middle level is dedicated to open living spaces. The ground floor offers a studio apartment, guest accommodation, a gym, and a wine cellar, catering to a variety of needs and providing plenty of space for family and guests.

Architecturally, the design features extensive glazing, glass balustrades, and open terraces, giving occupants an immersive experience of Queenstown’s dramatic, mountain landscape. Local schist stone cladding and Paradise stone pavers anchor the home to its environment, while rich timber elements – featured in ceilings, wall panels, and exposed beams – soften the rugged stone and bring warmth to the interiors. The result is an inviting, high-end residence that blends natural materials with contemporary luxury.
